Lector Ministry
Those who proclaim God’s Word in the liturgy are known as Ministers of the Word, Readers or Lectors. When you answer this call, you enter a deeper relationship with God revealed in sacred scripture. You take upon yourself the awesome duty and privilege of sharing the Word with your brothers and sisters in Christ.
Lectors proclaim the readings, with the exception of the Gospel. They may also announce the general intercessions when a deacon is not present.
Who? When? How?
This ministry is open to St. Michael parishioners, high school age or older, who have been baptized, and have received both First Communion and Confirmation. Lectors are expected to . . .
- Be responsible
- Have good reading and proclamation skills
- Believe and understand what they read
- Be punctual (early) when scheduled
- Be willing to improve their skills
Sunday lectors are scheduled once every 4 weeks at the Mass of their preference (whenever possible in teams of two); weekday lectors are on a rotating schedule. Lectors who volunteer to minister at funerals are called when a funeral is scheduled to check for their availability. Lectors usually meet twice a year for continuing spiritual, liturgical and technical formation.
